Ways to Participate in Better Breakfast Month with Your Preschooler

Ways to Participate in Better Breakfast Month with Your Preschooler at Kids 'R' Kids Katy, preschool, daycare, childcare

September is Better Breakfast Month and is therefore a perfect time to be more intentional about eating a healthy breakfast.  Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, since our bodies have been fasting all night and need nutrients to get started.

Try New Foods

This month add some new foods to your diet.  One fun way to do this is to look at how people in other countries enjoy breakfast, and choose a few to try yourself. This website lists what people outside of the United States eat for breakfast.  Try to add a new food or technique (i.e. poached eggs instead of fried eggs) to your family’s breakfast each week, to mix things up!

Take a Class

Involve your preschooler in cooking breakfast.  Find an online video or local kid-friendly cooking class to take with your preschooler.  If you choose an online video, follow the chef as you and your preschooler prepare breakfast together.  Most children are more willing to try different foods if they have helped prepare them.

Family Breakfast

If your family doesn’t typically eat breakfast together, try to eat together this month.  Having the whole family sit together to eat breakfast will make the meal more special.  If your preschooler is typically hesitant to eat breakfast, the excitement of eating with the whole family may entice them to eat this important meal.

Enjoy Breakfast Out

Choose one special day this month to treat the family to breakfast out.  Many restaurants offer healthy breakfast options.  This can be a great opportunity to try new ways to enjoy different breakfast foods.

Cookies for Breakfast

You are sure to blow your preschooler’s mind by serving them cookies for breakfast!  These cookies contain whole grains, apples, carrots, and raisins.  You can add nuts or seeds to add some protein and serve with a glass of milk, to start their day off by hitting multiple food groups.

Rainbow Breakfast

Serve your preschooler a bowl of plain or flavored yogurt with a rainbow of colors.  Begin by placing the yogurt in your preschooler’s favorite bowl and arrange the fruits in a rainbow shape.  Some ideas for red fruits include strawberries and watermelon.  Add clementines or papaya for orange and bananas or pineapple for yellow.  Kiwi or quartered green grapes work well for green and blueberries or quartered red grapes finish off your rainbow for the blue/purple level.
