Help Your Preschooler Beat the Back-to-School Blues

Help Your Preschooler Beat the Back-to-School Blues at Kids 'R' Kids Katy, preschool, daycare, childcare

It is hard to believe, but it is that time of year again – back-to-school time! Before you bust out the backpacks, you may find that your preschooler is already dreading the start or return to school. With a little planning, you can make going back-to-school a stress-free transition from summer fun. Here are four tips for beating the back-to-school blues your preschooler may be experiencing.

Prepare

Ask your preschool for a list of classroom supplies that will be needed, so your child can begin to prepare for the new school year. Some schools send out a supply list a couple of weeks before the school year begins while others post them on their website. Letting your preschooler choose a backpack or lunchbox, first day of school outfit, or new shoes can bring some excitement and anticipation to the start of school.

Practice

Your preschooler needs some time to adjust to a new school routine. Starting about two weeks before school starts, begin moving bedtime back by 10 or 15 minutes every couple of days. Practice setting alarms, waking up earlier, and eating breakfast and getting out the door by a certain time. Make it a fun challenge to beat the clock! Typically, things are less structured in the summer. Help your preschooler ease into a new school routine so that the transition is not too abrasive.

Party

Celebrate the end of summer in a fun way! Whether it is a cookout with friends, a play date at the pool, or a campfire with s’mores, taking some time to mark the end of summer in a memorable way can help your preschooler prepare for the year ahead.

Positivity

It is normal for your preschooler to experience some sadness at the thought of leaving you or being away from home. Help them recognize their negative thoughts and replace them with positive ones. Make a list of the positives about going to school like making friends, learning new things, or doing new activities. For little ones, make preschool sound like less of a chore and more of an adventure!
