Speaking to Preschoolers in a Way That Makes Them Want to Listen

Speaking to Preschoolers in a Way That Makes Them Want to Listen at Kids 'R' Kids Katy, preschool, daycare, childcare

Without realizing it, preschoolers may (and more often than we like) internally consider the following phrase: to listen or not to listen; that is the question! Is there an easier way?

Here are seven tips to help speak to your preschooler in a way that makes them want to listen.

  1. Whenever possible, go down to your preschooler’s eye level. This helps break down any intimidation for important conversations.
  2. Whether you can be at eye level or not, make eye contact with your child. This helps your child know that you are willing to pay attention to them while also talking through something important.
  3. Keep your voice calm and your volume low, especially if you are upset and need to communicate corrective behavior to your preschooler in some way.
  4. Keep empathy upfront in your communication. Emphasize to your child that any feelings your child is experiencing are okay. Expressing empathy also shows that you are your child’s teammate to work through any problems.
  5. Help your child label their specific feelings to help open up conversation. You can specifically tell your child that you are more than happy to listen to how they feel.
  6. Emphasize and model calming techniques before bringing up important topics with your preschooler. For example, if you are upset with your child, model (without your child even knowing you are trying to model the specific technique) that you need to breathe before saying anything you regret.
  7. Remember to smile and guard any negative facial expressions when communicating with your child. Even if they are accidental negative expressions, try to guard how your facial expressions come across during an important conversation.

Without a doubt, your preschooler recognizes and thrives on your unconditional love. It never hurts, though, to have strategies up your sleeve to help your child to want to listen to you more!
