How to Raise a Reader Starting in Preschool

How to Raise a Reader Starting in Preschool at Kids 'R' Kids Johns Creek Parkway, preschool, daycare, childcare

Parents may sometimes feel pressured to begin practicing skills with their preschoolers, such as reading. However, a love for reading can develop before a child actually knows how to read! Here are a few things you can do to inspire a love for reading in your preschooler.

Keep it no-stress with your preschooler!

First things first—parents do not need to push phonics rules on their preschooler while reading together at home. Books are designed to be for pure pleasure and topical learning. When possible, find books on topics that already interest your preschooler (dolphins, dinosaurs, trains, etc).

Utilize alphabet practice books with your preschooler.

Learning the basics of the alphabet will help set up your preschooler for later reading success. There are plenty of thematic library books that help teach letter recognition. The authors Audrey and Bruce Wood, have several books that go right along with this idea.

  • Alphabet Adventures
  • Alphabet Mystery
  • Alphabet Rescue

Take your preschooler on frequent library trips.

For later reading success to happen, preschoolers should develop an overall likeness of books. At an early age, preschoolers can learn how books bring both enjoyment and learning. Trips to the library can help bring about a natural likeness of books.

Teach your preschooler about what an author does.

Parents can look through their preschooler’s favorite books and discuss how an author wrote the words and thoughts of the book. Encourage your preschooler to draw a picture from their favorite book and mail it to the author if possible (or send an electronic copy through private messaging on the author’s social media account). Hopefully, the author will reply!

The above ideas are no-pressure ways of helping raise your preschooler to be a successful reader in the future. (Remember that success does not mean your child must be the best reader!) A natural love of books will help your preschooler both now and later down the road.
