Under normal circumstances, many families would be planning for an upcoming Spring Break vacation. Just because parents may not be traveling to a snow covered mountain or warm, sandy beach this year, there are still many opportunities for fun with your preschooler right at home!
Grow a Garden
Spring is the perfect time to find a sunny spot in the yard and start planting! Visiting a local garden store or the library will help parents and preschoolers decide what will grow best in their area. Under quarantine? Look around your kitchen! Seeds from strawberries, avocados, berries, potatoes, and so many fruits and vegetables can be used. No yard? Many seeds can be sprouted in glass jars indoors. Not only is this activity fun, but it will teach preschoolers about science, responsibility, and patience.
Plan a “Yes Day”
Inspiration for this comes from the book, Yes Day! by Amy Krouse Rosenthal. A “Yes Day” sounds like exactly what it is—it is a day where the parents say “yes” to whatever the kids want (within reason). Cake for breakfast? Yes! Wearing pajamas all day? Yes! Jumping in mud puddles? Yes! With a few ground rules and a little bit of prep, this day will become one the family wants to do every Spring Break!
Plan a Show
Turn your child’s favorite story into a production! Costumes can be made from many items already found in their closets. Socks make great puppets too. Use cardboard boxes to create a theater or design a set. Marionettes can be made with some toilet paper rolls, beads, and yarn.
Play a Game
The average board game will not do in this situation! Pinterest can be a best friend here. Balloon volleyball or an obstacle course (indoor or outdoor) get the children up and moving. Ever heard of “The Floor is Lava?” There is even a show on Netflix families can watch for inspiration. Parents, together with their children, can make their own version with pillows, furniture, or whatever else is around the house.
Spring Break fun is not canceled! It may look differently than it did in the past, but it does not have to be boring.
