A child’s body surface area makes up a greater proportion of their weight than adults, and therefore causes them to sweat more and quickly lose electrolytes in comparison to adults. Small children are also much less likely to recognize the signs of dehydration. We’ve come up with some great tips to keep everyone safe and cool this summer!

Recognize the Signs.

Kids won’t be able to know why they’re feeling signs of heat exhaustion so they may not verbalize them. Here are some warning signs:

       Nausea and vomiting

       Cool, clammy skin

       Dizziness or weakness

       Fatigue

       Headache

       Confusion

       Muscle Cramps

If children in your care exhibit these signs, immediately cool them down by placing cold compresses or ice packs on the neck, groin, or armpit areas, or have them sit in cool water. Going indoors into air-conditioning and removing layers of clothing will also cool them down.

Stay hydrated.

Be sure to take frequent water breaks on hot days. Try watermelon, homemade popsicles, or fruit-infused waters as fun alternatives to plain water, and definitely avoid sugary beverages such as sports drinks or sodas.

Avoid the heat of the day.

Schedule the bulk of high-energy outdoor activities to occur in the cool of the morning or early evening and have some indoor activities planned for the hottest part of the day (11am-3pm).

Protect your skin.

Always apply sunscreen when spending any time outdoors this summer and reapply at least every 2 hours. Dress your children in single, lightweight layers of clothing in light colors. Keep clothing loose so that sweating is not inhibited. Darker, more saturated colors will absorb more of the sun’s heat and increase risk of overheating.

Want to learn more about Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Highland Glen located in Pearland, Texas?
