You are changing your community every day, simply by existing within it. So why not go for some positive change? You don’t have to wait until your preschooler is older to begin! As a parent, you can model volunteerism and community involvement for your child in easy and even fun ways. Below are just a few to get involved:
Join or Start a Community Garden.
Not only will this give you and your child a chance to get some fresh air and exercise, but you’ll also be able to donate any extra produce to a local food bank or soup kitchen.
Serve Meals at a Homeless Shelter or Soup Kitchen.
Many shelters will allow children to help serve food or set tables. This is a great way to teach your child about empathy and compassion.
Collect Clothes, Toys, or Other Items to Donate to a Local Thrift Store or Charity.
Have your child go through their toys and clothes, and pick out items they are ready to let go of. Explain the importance of sharing with others, especially those that may not have been afforded the same levels of opportunity as your child.
Participate in or Start a Fundraising Campaign for a Cause That Is Important to You and Your Family.
Most importantly, model kindness, generosity, and civic engagement for your child. Show them that you care about your community and that you’re willing to work to make it a better place. This could be picking up litter in a nearby park or helping an elderly neighbor with yard work.
You will never run out of ways to give back, so practice spotting them in your everyday life! By doing some of these simple things with your child, you create a foundation of compassion that will last the rest of your preschooler’s life.
