Increasing Your Preschooler’s Attention Span

Increasing Your Preschooler's Attention Span at Kids 'R' Kids Highland Glen, preschool, daycare, childcare

Your preschooler’s attention span or the ability to concentrate and give undivided attention to something is an important skill to develop. It can be difficult for young children to block out other sights, sounds, or unnecessary information. As your preschooler starts school, it will become important for them to be able to focus on certain tasks while ignoring other distractions. Try these activities to help increase your preschooler’s attention span.

Play a Game

Children most often learn best through play. Playing a board game is a great way to improve a preschooler’s attention span. Many board games require remembering and following rules, taking turns, keeping track of rounds or points, and so on. A child has to remain focused on the game in order to participate and possibly win. Parents can prompt their children throughout the game by asking questions to see if they are paying attention.

Take a Break

You know what it is like to sit in front of a computer or at a desk for a long time, and sometimes you just need a quick break to reset, re-energize, and refocus. When you recognize that your preschooler is giving up on the task at hand, guide them through a brain break or movement activity. These do not have to be long or complicated. Turn on a song and have a dance party. When the song is over, get back to work. Or go outside for a couple of minutes and get some fresh air. You can find lots of ideas for brain breaks on the Internet, but anything that gets them moving and the blood flowing for a minute or two will help boost their focus and allow them to return to their assignment for a few more minutes.

Make it Fun

If you are trying to get your preschooler to complete a difficult task, find a way to make it fun. Are you trying to get them to practice the alphabet? Let them trace the letters with finger paint or write them in shaving cream. Let them use Play-Doh, Lego bricks, or other hands-on objects.
