It\u2019s the most wonderful time of the year! Which means lots of gift giving and gift receiving\u2014and who doesn\u2019t love receiving gifts? This winter is a wonderful opportunity to teach your preschooler about gift giving and how to have a generous spirit, not just during the holidays, but all year long.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Why\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

The first thing you should make sure to do to instill a giving nature in your child is explain <\/span>why we give gifts<\/span><\/i>. It\u2019s not to get something in return or \u201cbecause I said so,\u201d it\u2019s because you <\/span>want<\/span><\/i> to. Tell your preschooler how happy it makes you to give them a gift\u2014how you love to see their happy smiles and their excitement when they open a gift they\u2019ve been wanting. Don\u2019t they want to do that for someone they love, too?<\/span><\/p>\n

The Way\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

It\u2019s important to include the concept of <\/span>thoughtfulness<\/span><\/i> when gift giving with your little one. Take your preschooler shopping with you when you go pick out gifts for family and friends, and don\u2019t be afraid to let your little one be in on your choices. Ask them, \u201cDo you think they would like this? Why? What do <\/span>you<\/span><\/i> think we should get them?\u201d You\u2019d be surprised at what your kiddos can come up with when they get to pick out gifts, and a lot of the time, they have great ideas you never would\u2019ve considered.<\/span><\/p>\n

The What\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Not every gift has to be expensive or flashy\u2014<\/span>homemade gifts or inexpensive items<\/span><\/a> are just as valuable and precious as any pricey gift. Instill in your child a <\/span>sense of meaning <\/span><\/i>when it comes to gifts that doesn\u2019t come from a price tag, but from the heart. Make some homemade gifts for their classmates, or take the time to write a heartfelt card with your preschooler.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Who<\/span><\/h3>\n

The last thing you can teach your preschooler is that gifts come in all shapes and sizes\u2014this includes <\/span>giving your time or your efforts<\/span><\/i>. Give the gift of volunteering this year by picking a cause together. Does your little one love animals? Volunteer together at the animal shelter\u2014the holidays are a busy time for many animal shelters, and many have programs where even small children can give back. Donate toys or presents to organizations that specifically serve to help low income families or orphanages. The possibilities to give back are endless!<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether it\u2019s by giving time, a handwritten card, or a store-bought gift, your little one will gain so much by learning how to give the perfect gift this winter. By teaching them how to give cheerfully and meaningfully, you are truly giving your preschooler the most precious gift.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
