What is best? Is a hands-off approach better? What about a helping hand? Here are some problem-solving techniques to teach your preschooler on how to withstand hardships.

Time your help well.

Sometimes, it is best to jump in and help your child through a difficulty right away. At other times, though, it is beneficial to wait to offer your help. This allows your preschooler the chance to practice coming up with solutions on their own. This is definitely a balancing act. In the long-run, though, it benefits your child to practice working through the difficult times versus someone always solving their problems.

Model problem-solving for your child.

Ashley Cullins, from Big Life Journal, teaches the importance of good modeling when teaching your child to work through problems. With your preschooler, you can show a calm response to a hardship. You can even share several solutions with your child. Then, you could have the opportunity to pick a good choice to help overcome the problem.

Allow for creative play.

Preschoolers learn much from creative play. In playtime, problems arise, but in a non-threatening way. Use these playtime problems as a springboard to use in other more difficult examples in your preschooler’s day.

Use helpful books.

Ashley Spires has written a wonderful book called, The Most Magnificent Thing. It is about a young girl who gets frustrated when what she desires to build is not turning out as planned. As you read this book (or similar ones) to your child, you could point out that problem-solving involves many retries and breaks along the way!

Unfortunately, problem-solving strategies will not be learned overnight. It takes time and consistency. One day, these strategies will start to sink in a little bit more. Until then, press on (and breathe)!

If you enjoyed this blog, please take a look at our school’s blog page.
