Numbers are everywhere! Number recognition is an important concept for preschoolers and a foundational math skill, but not every learning activity requires a lot of preparation or craft supplies. Simply tracing numbers with markers or finger paint can help children practice recognizing numbers. Playing \u201cI Spy\u201d with numbers while standing in line at the grocery store or sitting in a waiting room is a fun way to sneak in some number practice and do something engaging while passing the time. Children do enjoy hands-on activities, too. If parents want a couple of quick and easy ones, here are two to try.<\/span><\/p>\n

Numbers Target Practice<\/span><\/h4>\n

Materials Needed: sidewalk chalk and filled water balloons<\/span><\/p>\n

Draw a large target (circle with four rings with each ring getting smaller towards the center) using the sidewalk chalk<\/span>. Then add several numbers in each ring. For younger children, start with the numbers 1-10. For more difficulty, use 2-digit numbers in the rings. There are two ways to play. For the first way, the adult calls out a number and the child throws water balloons at the number until it is erased by the water. The second way to play is for the child to throw a balloon at a number and then call out the number they hit. Children have so much fun with water balloons that they will not even realize they are learning!<\/span><\/p>\n

Counting Fruit Snacks<\/span><\/h4>\n

Materials Needed: several packages of fruit snacks and dice<\/span><\/p>\n

For a quick and simple math activity at snack time, open several packages of fruit snacks and make a pile in front of the preschooler. Any small food item would work though. Feel free to improvise with pieces of fruit or cereal. Have the child roll a die and count out that many fruit snacks before eating them. To make the snacks last longer, have them roll two dice and count out the number of fruit snacks for each dice. Practice adding them together or subtracting the numbers on the dice. After each correct answer, the child can eat a fruit snack. Repeat several times. Soon children will begin to recognize numbers everywhere!<\/span><\/p>\n
