Children absorb new information each and every day by watching and learning from their parents and others. This is why it’s imperative to set an example for your little one. If your preschooler is acting out or disregarding rules, you may need to rethink your process for enforcing said rules. Here are a few ways to do this.

Why have rules?

Start off by explaining to your child why rules matter. Tell him or her that rules are put in place to ensure that everyone is safe and kind to one another. Calling other children mean names, hitting others, or disrespecting the teacher are all obvious no-no’s. In order to be safe and happy at school, your child should stay with the class at all times, listen to the teacher and other staff members, and be friendly to other students. Once your child realizes that rules are put in place with good intentions, she will be more likely to follow them.

Sharing is caring

This common phrase is more important than you may realize. Teaching the value of sharing with others will not only instill compassion and selflessness in your child, but will also help her learn to make friends. By inviting other children to play with her she will start to grasp the importance of sharing and giving back to others.

Manners matter

“Please”, “thank you”, and “I’m sorry” are just three of many important phrases that your child should learn. While “please” and “thank you” are somewhat easier for young children to grasp (because they use them when they want or need something), learning to apologize can be a little more difficult. Some children don’t want to admit or accept when they have made a mistake, or they simply do not understand what they have done wrong. Gently explain to your preschooler how her actions may have negatively affected someone else, and ask them how they would feel if it had been done to them.

These changes may not happen overnight, but with consistency, patience, and a few gentle reminders, your child will soon adapt these new mannerisms and remember to say “please” and “thank you”.

If you enjoyed this blog and want to read more, click below for our blog from last month!

Fourth of July Fun with Preschoolers

Want to learn more about Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Greatwood located in Richmond, Texas?
