Many preschoolers, understandably, do not quite comprehend the reasons why we have a day of thanksgiving each year. They enjoy the time at home eating pumpkin pie, playing with cousins, and helping mom cook in the kitchen. And, these are great ways to make memories! But, if you are trying to teach your preschooler that there\u2019s a little more to this annual holiday than a day off of school, read on! Here\u2019s the preschool friendly version:<\/p>\n

The Thanksgiving Story<\/h3>\n

The Pilgrims were a group of people who came to America, a new land. Some were looking for a new beginning. Others were searching for a land of freedom for all people. In the fall of 1620 the Pilgrims left their countries and sailed to America on their boat, the Mayflower. When they arrived in America, there were no stores, or schools, or homes. They had to work hard to build homes and find food before the winter came.<\/p>\n

In the spring, the Pilgrims met a friendly Native American named Squanto. They were happy to hear Squanto speaking English! Squanto was a kind friend and helped the Pilgrims learn to plant and grow crops. He helped the Pilgrims become peaceful neighbors and friends with surrounding Native American tribes. They showed the Pilgrims how to hunt and fish.<\/p>\n

By the following fall, the Pilgrims had plenty of crops to feed themselves and their new Native American friends. They invited their new friends to come celebrate and to give thanks with a big feast.<\/p>\n

Many years later, President Abraham Lincoln declared the fourth Thursday of November to be a national holiday, Thanksgiving Day. We have celebrated it at this time every year since then.<\/p>\n

Celebrating Today<\/h3>\n

If you are looking for some fun and educational movies to enjoy with your preschooler, give \u201cThe Mayflower Voyagers (This Is America, Charlie Brown)<\/a><\/u>\u201d a try. Or you may prefer watching \u201cThe Mouse on the Mayflower<\/a><\/u>” instead. However, you decide to celebrate this year, be sure to set some time aside to talk about what you are thankful for!<\/p>\n
