Do you have positive or negative memories of St. Patrick’s Day? Each year as a child, did you dread the thought of being pinched, or were you the one devoted to spotting those who were not wearing green? Thankfully, there are many fun ways to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with your preschooler that are not painful for anyone involved. Here are a few fun ways to celebrate with your preschooler this year:
Enjoy sensory play together.
With your preschooler, you can dye rice to make the theme color of St. Patrick’s Day! You only need a few supplies (uncooked rice, green food coloring, vinegar, and a lidded container for mixing). For added fun, find green items from around the house to use in the finished sensory bin.
For each batch, use one cup of rice mixed with ½ a teaspoon of vinegar. Add as much green food coloring as desired. Be ready to shake, shake, shake. Using a lidded container, mix until the rice absorbs the food coloring. It may take additional time to properly dry. Make as many batches as desired, and your preschooler can play around with making different shades of green.
Get your preschooler moving around!
You can take advantage of this holiday to involve additional movement into your preschooler’s day. Whether you prefer to be indoor, outdoor, or both, set a timer and have your child run around looking for as many green things as possible in your desired amount of time.
Spend time reading St. Patrick’s Day themed books together. Examples include:
