One of the main ways children learn is through listening to how others talk and gaining a vocabulary to interact with those around them. One of the best things you can do for your preschooler is make efforts to build their vocabulary.

Use your words

Many parents find themselves immediately giving their children what they want, or anticipating their needs before they vocalize them. You will help your child’s vocabulary and communication skills greatly by telling them to ask for what they want instead of pointing or saying “that.” Teach them the correct terms for things, always, and encourage them to describe new objects they’re not sure how to label. Requiring them to use their words will help them practice words they know and even encourage them to pick up some new one! As they grow out of infancy and toddlerhood, it’s an important skill for them to learn in using words to ask for things instead of using sounds, gestures or even crying. Telling children to “use your words” helps them to communicate with others.

Grab a book

Reading is a wonderful way for people of all ages to build their vocabularies. When reading with your preschooler, make sure to read books that have a wide range of topics and many pictures. Don’t speed through the book, but take time to ask your child what the name of the objects are. Use reading as an opportunity to teach your child different words for the same thing. Even simple “Look and Find” books can go a great way in promoting vocabulary. Finding and naming objects in a picture helps children recognize familiar objects and learn about new ones.

Watch your tone

Many people get in the habit of using “baby talk” when talking to young children and don’t realize how limiting this is to their vocabulary. Speaking to your child like they are responsive, understanding people instead of babies who don’t yet know words will change the way your child learns how to speak. Don’t use words that they have outgrown, for example, “booboo” for “hurt.” Children are very smart, and the more they are treated like the learning individuals they are, the faster they learn and will grow to be intelligent and expressive people.

If you enjoyed this blog and want to read more, click below for our blog from last month!
Summertime Games for Preschoolers

Want to learn more about Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Fort Mill located in Fort Mill, South Carolina?
