Once they\u2019re old enough to understand and communicate, they also want to assert their own independence and test boundaries\u2026and your patience. There will be so many opinions on how you should discipline children. While this is not a comprehensive \u201chow-to,\u201d we have some great options to consider.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are ways to set your child up for success long before the first disciplinary action is even needed. Praise good behavior by setting up a reward system. Make a chart for putting away toys every day, for example. When you can check off 5 times they\u2019ve done it without asking, perhaps they will get a reward of a sticker book or even a favorite treat!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Inversely, teach your child about consequences. Use that word and refrain from saying \u201cpunishment.\u201d Children will learn that certain behaviors lead to certain consequences, such as removal of privileges, and they will figure this out quickly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stop and consider during a meltdown or tantrum, or before you enter a situation where one could happen: is my child hungry, tired, or overstimulated? Making sure a child gets plenty of sleep and exercise is paramount and consider they may just be \u201changry!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Know that every child is different, and that there will be a period of trial and error. The important thing is for you, the adult, to be patient as you find the methods that work best for you and your child or children. Once you establish a healthy method that works in your home, be confident in your choices.
