Using the tips below, you can help your child begin to gain confidence and successfully ride without training wheels!

Gear Up

It goes without saying that your child should wear a helmet while riding a bike, but getting them elbow and knee pads will help them feel safe and less afraid of falling. They might only wear these for a few days before they are confidently riding a bike with only a helmet!

Lower the Seat

Another way to help your child feel safer and more in control is by lowering their seat so their feet can touch the ground. This will help your child feel more comfortable! Once your child gets used to riding without training wheels, you can move the seat back up to a normal height.

Try Grass, Then Concrete

When your child starts trying to ride the bike, make sure they are on grass! This softer surface will be less abrasive when they fall and it just doesn’t seem as intimidating to your child. Small, grassy hills are perfect for helping your preschooler learn to balance their bike. Once they are getting better at balancing, let them try the sidewalk!

Let Go

Hold on to the back of your child’s bike while they begin pedaling and let go! Let them know they are probably going to fall when you let go, but that it won’t hurt because they are on grass and their head, knees, and elbows are protected. Once they fall the first time, they will realize it’s not so bad and they’ll gain confidence, wanting to try again and again to master it.

Whether it takes your child minutes, hours, or days to master riding a bike without their training wheels, cheer them on and be patient with them! The confidence you have in them will go a long way as they try to learn a new skill that seems scary to them.

Want to learn more about Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Fort Mill located in Fort Mill, South Carolina?
