Here are some practical ways to begin teaching patience to your child:

Taking Turns

Talk to your child about the importance of taking turns because it means everyone gets to have a chance to participate. A good place to practice this is at the park with the swings! Many times, the swings are occupied or someone else wants to use them. If you child doesn’t handle taking turns well, don’t avoid bringing them to the park! Keep teaching them this lesson every time until it sticks.

Start Early and Small

Begin requiring patience from your child at a very early age in small doses. You might only be asking them to wait two minutes for juice, but it is a great start for them. As they get older, you can begin pushing them to be patient for longer periods of time.

Self-Control

Having patience boils down to whether or not your child knows they can and should control their actions and emotions. Help them develop self-control by asking them to regain composure before granting their request. This will help teach your preschooler that acting out will not help them get what they want.

Make Them Wait

Especially in today’s culture of instant gratification, parents may need to teach their child patience by delaying things. If your child really wants a new toy, try making them wait until they have saved up enough allowance for it or they have a birthday. There may be no reason for this other than teaching your child that they can be patient for things they care about and that is okay!

These four tips will help you begin developing patience with your child. Even adults struggle with patience, so the foundations you build when they are young will serve them well as they grow up!

If you enjoyed these tips, you’ll want to check out our blog on Preschoolers and Trick-or Treating!

Want to learn more about Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Eagle Springs located in Humble, Texas?
