A child\u2019s body surface area makes up a greater proportion of their weight than adults, and therefore causes them to sweat more and quickly lose electrolytes in comparison to adults. There are still ways to play outdoors safely, even on the hottest days! We\u2019ve come up with some great tips to keep everyone safe and cool this summer!<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Recognize the Signs of Dehydration.<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since your little one won\u2019t be able to tell you that they\u2019re feeling the signs of heat exhaustion, here are some things to look for:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nausea and vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cool, clammy skin<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dizziness or weakness<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Confusion<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Muscle Cramps<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you recognize any of these signs, immediately cool your child by placing cold compresses or ice packs on the neck, groin, or armpit areas, or have them sit in cool water (a kiddie pool in the shade will at least let them think it\u2019s still play time!).<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Stay hydrated. <\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s important to hydrate <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">before <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">thirst even shows up as a symptom, so take frequent water breaks. Try homemade popsicles or fruit-infused waters to keep it fun for picky kiddos who don\u2019t want to take water breaks, and avoid sugary drinks or sodas.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Avoid the heat of the day. <\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Let your preschoolers do most of their high-energy activities outdoors in the cool of the morning or early evening and have some indoor activities planned for the hottest part of the day (11am-3pm).<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Protect your skin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Always apply sunscreen when spending any time outdoors this summer and reapply at least every 2 hours. Dress your children in single, lightweight layers of clothing in light colors.
