November is right smack in the middle of the holiday season. This makes it the perfect time to stop and practice thankfulness with your family, but more specifically, your preschooler! The sooner your little one can catch on to the gratitude attitude, the better! Here are some ways you can practice being thankful as a family.
Start with the basics
Before your toddler started talking, you were probably modeling manners for him. Emphasizing words like “please” and “thank you” when you interact with your child makes it natural for him to pick up these displays of etiquette when he begins to speak. Insisting that your small child use these manners when interacting with others is an important building block for thankfulness.
Prep your preschooler
Sometimes it is appropriate to sit down with your preschooler and teach concepts plain and simple. Thankfulness is one of these lessons. Teaching children how blessed they are to have basic needs met like food to eat, a place to live, and a family that loves them will help them to be thankful. Using a good book to illustrate your point can really help your lesson sink in.
Practice makes permanent
Once your preschooler understands what all he has to be thankful for, there’s no better way to solidify the concept in his mind than by practicing it! A great way to do this is to simply share things you are thankful for. A fun way to do this is to get a pumpkin and a permanent marker and start writing them down. Starting at the top of the pumpkin, write things you and your preschooler are thankful for each day. Each time you complete a row around the pumpkin, move down and start a new one until your entire pumpkin is full of thankfulness! This makes a fun visual of all the things you have to be thankful for!
