Benefits of Imaginary Play

imaginary play

Imaginary play is more than your child just pretending and escaping the real world. This type of play can help your child build developmental skills that will greatly benefit them in the future. Check out four of the benefits of imaginary play below:

Encourages Creativity

When your child pretends to be a character other than themselves, they create their own scenarios full of adventure and fun. Your child will probably find creative ways to use the toys and objects around them to play into their imaginary adventures. Where we see ordinary objects, your child is growing their creativity as they use the objects as interesting props in their imaginative play.

Enhances Planning and Organizational Skills

During imaginary play, children often plan out their scenarios. They often set up problems and devise a solution before beginning to act out the scenario. Using their toys, some children even set up intricate, organized settings for their imaginary scenarios to take place.

Boosts Independence

When kids engage in pretend play, they create their own stories and situations that are separate from the world they live in and the situations they normally experience. This helps them learn to entertain themselves, developing their independence. Kids are also able to express themselves in pretend play, reinforcing likes, dislikes, and the ability to make choices, which helps them grow into more independent children as well.

Improves Social Skills

Children who participate in imaginary play with others often improve their social skills while doing so. They learn about listening to others and working together to accomplish goals. Another important lesson they learn is that not everyone can be the “best” character; sometimes they have to play the less exciting character to help everyone be successful. This is an important lesson to begin learning!
