The preschool years are exciting years bursting with development. As a preschooler matures, they will be learning skills to help prepare them for kindergarten and on. It is essential for them to have fun as new skills are learned. Here are a few activities that will help with a few of the necessary skills.<\/span><\/p>\n

Counting<\/span><\/h4>\n

Dot to dot puzzles are one way to practice counting. For preschoolers who are still learning number recognition, parents can help guide the pencil as they count the numbers together. Another option would be to count snacks! Whether they are having goldfish or pretzels, a preschooler can help count how many pieces they receive for a snack. <\/span><\/p>\n

Number recognition<\/span><\/h4>\n

Using a deck of cards, a preschooler can make multiple matches of numbers 2-10. More advanced preschoolers can search through the cards for a specific number given. If it is nice outside, draw a 4×4 grid of squares on the driveway. Next write a path through the squares using 1-10 in consecutive order. Then fill in the other squares with numbers that are not needed for the path. The preschooler should attempt to get from the beginning to the end by jumping in order from 1-10. This can also be used to count or for random recognition of numbers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Shapes<\/span><\/h4>\n

Write out large shapes on individual pieces of paper for your preschooler. They can then use Play-Doh and straws to create shapes over the printed shapes. The straws can be used for straight lines with the Play-Doh being connections at the corners. Be sure the straw lengths match the line lengths drawn out on the paper. Geoboards and rubber bands can also be used to create shapes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Patterns<\/span><\/h4>\n

Try using ice cube trays for patterns. Each cube can hold a colored pompom or be left empty to match the desired pattern. A second pattern option is to use snack food! When snacks are a mix of goldfish, Cheerios, yogurt bites, or another variety, have the preschooler place their snack into a pattern.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are many different and fun math activities that will foster learning. Many of these activities can be done with supplies found around the home. A preschooler can continue to flourish and develop math skills with a bit of fun intentionality by their parents!<\/span><\/p>\n
