Tips on Choosing Safe Gifts for Preschoolers

Did you know that December is Safe Toys and Gifts Month? This month provides parents with an opportunity to think through how to choose safe gifts for the preschool age (and beyond). Below are a few helpful tips to consider as you choose gifts for your preschooler or their friends.

When in doubt, do not buy small toys

If you are concerned that a toy may be unsafe for a young child, stay clear of any small toys or toys with a lot of small removable parts. Though some children are more mature than others with what goes in their mouths, try to be mindful when purchasing small toys for children of preschool age and younger.

Check to see if the toy has button batteries inside

You may be surprised by how many gifts contain button batteries. For example, there are light-up hair brushes that may contain button batteries. These batteries are small and very dangerous for a child to swallow. Noise-making birthday cards may also contain these batteries.

Stay away from the noisiest of toys

Noisy technology can damage your preschooler’s ears. You can check out healthychildren.org to read their advice for protecting your child’s ears during the holidays.

Notice the age ranges listed on children’s gift packaging

While these age ranges may not always seem accurate or ideal for your preschooler, the age ranges listed on toys do help in regards to the safety and frustration levels of your child as they interact with the toy.

Look for video game ratings

The initials “EC” represent “Early Childhood”, and “E” stands for “Everyone”. These ratings will help keep you from purchasing any video games that your preschooler is not quite ready to see or hear, based on that age bracket.

If buying a protective life vest, look for the label to say that the vest is Coast Guard approved!

This will be a sure way to keep your little one as safe as possible when they have water fun once the weather warms up.

You know your preschooler best, and you lovingly protect them well already. We hope these tips will be helpful guidelines to consider this December while shopping for your child’s holiday gifts!
