Gather Books
Head to your local library and gather all sorts of books and resources about the African safari. Include children’s story books, picture books, magazines, and even articles from reference materials and informational books. Look through them and read age-appropriate ones together so your preschooler has an idea of what a safari is and what kind of animals could be seen on one.
Prepare Your Home
Print pictures to hang on the wall and gather up any stuffed animals that can be a part of your safari. Choose an animal soundtrack to play from your phone and create a Jeep on the couch complete with a paper plate steering wheel. Find some clothes and hats that can be reimagined as safari gear.
Use Your Imagination
Next, load up the Jeep, push play on the soundtrack and be off on your adventure. Use some binoculars (real or pretend) to look for animals and landmarks. Allow your child to draw pictures of all the things they saw on the “trip” in a notebook. You can learn about them more in depth later.
Snack
Finally, search for a good safari documentary that is kid friendly and enjoy watching it together while you munch on some yummy snacks in your Jeep. You can rename the snacks into safari sounding names. Pretzels can be giraffe spots, and Oreos can be zebra stripes, etc.
Now that the wheels are turning in your head, take these ideas and run with them! Make it as simple or elaborate as you want. Have tons of fun learning with your preschooler!
