Exploring New Foods with Your Preschooler During National Fruit and Veggies Month

Exploring New Foods with Your Preschooler During National Fruit and Veggies Month at Kids 'R' Kids Cypress, preschool, daycare, childcare

National Fruit and Veggies Month is upon us! It could be the perfect time to explore new foods with your preschooler. Depending on how ambitious your preschooler is, that could either be an exciting or difficult experience. Here are some ideas that might help you with your adventure.

Create a fruit and veggie inspired challenge.

You could determine a goal of how many new fruits and veggies your preschooler will eat within the month. It could be a fun game with weekly rewards; however, be careful to not turn it into a stressful situation or battle with your preschooler.

Try to plan a grocery shopping trip that includes your preschooler.

While there, you could let them choose something new to try. By allowing them to choose, they are able to take ownership of the process and may be more receptive to try what they chose.

When trying new veggies or fruits, help your preschooler use all their senses before even taking a bite. Describe how it looks, such as color and shape, how it feels, how it smells, if it makes any sounds, etc.  Then take a tiny taste test, and finally take a bite! Allow your child to take as big or small of a bite as they would like.

Reading about foods is another fun way to explore new foods.

Just Try One Bite by Adam Mansbach and Camila Alves McConaughey is an amusing story of three children trying to change, for the better, their parents’ eating habits. Eat Your Colors (Rookie Toddler) by Amanda Miller takes your preschooler through many different colors while showing different fruits and veggies. Mrs. Peanuckle has written Mrs. Peanuckle’s Fruit Alphabet and Mrs. Peanuckle’s Vegetable Alphabet. Both books work through the alphabet introducing fruits or vegetables and explaining information about them.

Try to not become discouraged if your preschooler does not easily enjoy new foods. It generally takes a minimum of 8 tries to accept a new food. Continue to encourage new foods and soon you may be surprised at their more refined palate.
