To raise a reader, there are investments you can make in your preschooler’s life. More often than not, becoming a reader does not just happen. Rather, it takes being intentional with reading. There are different ways you can be intentional to promote reading with your preschooler.
Read Every Day
Your preschooler needs to be frequently and consistently surrounded with reading. Take the time to read aloud to them every day. Choose a variety of books that will introduce them to an array of things they find interesting, and places, role models, and other subjects you deem necessary. Reading daily not only exposes your preschooler to a wealth of knowledge, but it also provides a time of bonding between the two of you.
Visit your library often
Libraries present many opportunities to foster reading. Bring your preschooler to your local library for story time. Story time often includes other activities that help tie in the book with your preschooler’s world. Libraries also provide book recommendations. Visiting the library should be part of your routine.
Blend reading into everyday life
Show your preschooler how reading is part of much of what we do daily. Help him read your grocery shopping list while you are out. Read street signs while you are out driving. Walk him through a recipe as you cook supper. Be creative and see how many ways you can include your preschooler in the countless ways we use reading each day.
Integrate outside the book activities
After reading books, provide activities that reinforce what was read. For books on transportation, you could take a field trip near an airport, train station, or bus station. Books that talk about food could be followed by making a snack from ingredients mentioned. If animals were read about, take a stroll through the neighborhood and see how many different animals you can find. If crafts are enjoyable, you can find crafts for almost any topic!
Just like other skills, some kids take to reading more naturally than others. You should not be concerned if your preschooler may take a little extra guidance to get her interested in books. By incorporating reading into everyday life, and taking steps to connect reading with the things he enjoys the most, your preschooler will quickly begin to progress.
