Do you often find yourself in situations where it seems like keeping your preschooler’s attention is a wasted effort (or that at least you should earn a medal for your effort)? You are not alone! Helping your preschooler improve in this area is a learned skill for your child. Here are some strategies to help increase your preschooler’s attention span in the course of everyday life.
Consider First Things First
As best as possible, make sure your preschooler has adequate (and consistent) rest and good nutrition. Both will help in focus and concentration. It is important to follow good sleep and nutrition patterns, even on the weekends.
Link It Up
Regarding important conversations, create a link between your child’s natural interests and the topic at hand. This can help grab and hold your child’s attention. For example, if your preschooler enjoys trains, and your needful conversation with your child involves recent classroom behavior, create a link between the two. You can make up a fun story and pretend that the engineer was not following the rules for what direction to take his train and how nothing worked well as a result. Transition to the problems of personal public behavior.
Guard the Overload
Try not to overload your preschooler with too many instructions or pieces of information at one time. Overload can cause your child to stop listening to other aspects of what you are trying to communicate. Try to start small and work your way up to what you expect of your child.
Consider the Time of Day
When you try to grow your child’s attention span, consider the time of day and the circumstances surrounding when you need your child to focus. If your child is hungry or too tired, it may not be a good time to stretch your child’s attention span.
Granted, it may take a while to gain traction in your preschooler’s attention span. Remember, small strides count!
