Your Preschool Visit Checklist

Preschool offers many benefits for parents and children alike. It aids social, emotional, and academic development in young children and offers parents’ assistance in encouraging their child’s overall development (and a breather during the day). Once you know you need a preschool program for your child, it’s time to find just the right one. There are so many options out there, so how do you know which one will be the perfect fit? Once you research the schools on your list, the ultimate deciding factor will be the visit to the school or learning center. Here is your checklist for everything you need to ask and learn during that visit

1.Get the Preliminary Information First

The first thing you want to do is ask about the actual administration of the program. You can often get this information before the visit by calling the school. You should ask about:

  • All fees associated with the program
  • Admission policies, so you can determine if your child is even eligible
  • Curriculum

Some schools may run open houses, during which you can schedule a meeting with a staff member. Or you can schedule both the physical visit and sit-down meeting on the same day. Make sure to spend some time in a classroom to observe and meet teachers. Above all else, bring your child along so you can see how they react to the school. Pay attention to the following details about the facility:

  • Cleanliness
  • Safety of indoor areas and outdoor play areas
  • Location and number of smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and first aid kits
  • Plenty of age-appropriate toys and books that are in good condition

3.Ask Plenty of Questions During the Visit

When you sit down with the director or other staff member one-on-one, you’ll want to make sure you have all the information you need to make the right decision. Make a list of everything you need and want to know. You may want to include the following questions:

  • What are the policies on toilet-training? Some schools will not admit children who are still in diapers.
  • How much parent involvement is there? Is there an active parent association that plans events and programs? If there is one, is it mandatory for all parents? Determine what kind of involvement you’re looking for. You may want to be very involved, or your job may not allow you the time to be part of a mandatory association. Make sure you know what you’re getting yourself into. Also find out how you will be updated on your child’s progress (email, letter, in-person conferences, etc.).
  • How are conflicts resolved? Make sure there are procedures in place to prevent arguments between children from becoming full-blown issues
