Since their young brains are still developing impulse control, they want what they want now. So how can we help our children learn to wait?\u00a0 We, too, must W-A-I-T.!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>W<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ork with your child\u2019s attention span in mind. A preschooler\u2019s focus is equal to approximately four minutes times their age. So a five-year-old has roughly a 20-minute ability to concentrate on one task. Kids can sometimes grow impatient because their minds are not able to pay attention for as long as we ask them to do so. Are your expectations for your child age-appropriate?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>A<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">rrange your day with your child where you both have \u201calone\u201d time and \u201ctogether\u201d time. Age-appropriate alone time teaches your child patience because it gives them a \u201cboundary time\u201d where they may play by themselves in their room and may not interrupt you. Learning to wait for \u201ctogether\u201d time to talk to you will increase their self-control.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>I<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">dentify with your child by validating their feelings, but not their impatience. Try saying something like, \u201cI know you\u2019re upset because you are not allowed to have ice cream until after you\u2019ve eaten your chicken and green beans, but meat and veggies will make you strong.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>T<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">hank your child when they show patience. Say something like, \u201cI\u2019m really glad you ate all your chicken and green beans.
