In the everyday rush of life, sometimes we accidentally go days or even weeks without really asking our preschoolers about their days and having a real conversation with them. Here are ways to delve deeper into your child\u2019s life while still having a busy life of your own.<\/p>\n

Pinpoint Talking Times<\/h3>\n

Everyone\u2019s days are different, and having good talks boils down to finding the best time to do so. That may be on the drive home from school\u2014turn off the radio and ask your child how their day was instead. Or maybe your drive home isn\u2019t long enough to really talk. So what do you do when you have dinner? Do you watch TV? Do you mostly talk to your spouse or the older children at the table? Try turning off the TV or including your preschooler in the conversation to make the time to hear about their day.<\/p>\n

Ask Follow-Up Questions<\/h3>\n

When you ask your kiddo, \u201cHow was your day?\u201d do they just say \u201cgood\u201d before moving on? Ask questions like \u201cWhat did you do today?\u201d \u201cWhat did you learn?\u201d \u201cWho did you play with?\u201d \u201cWhat do your friends like to do?\u201d Focus on the questions that excite your little one and lean into those topics. Ask open-ended questions that will draw out conversation from your child.<\/p>\n

Make It A Game<\/h3>\n

Every day, play \u201cYour Favorite Part\u201d where each participant shares their favorite part of their day. Consistency is key with this; the longer you go every day playing this game, the more your little one will look forward to this game and will want to share something new with you every day.<\/p>\n

Listen<\/h3>\n

Overall, listen to what your child is saying<\/a> to you. It can be easy to tune them out and instead think about your dinner plans when they talk for five minutes about their favorite song. However, these conversations with your child are priceless and may represent more than it seems. Maybe your child is passionate about music and should pursue an instrument or singing lessons. Does your child answer \u201cFine\u201d when you ask them how their day is? Are they just quiet, or are they unhappy at school? Paying attention to what your preschooler is telling you is the key to not only learning about their lives but also about how they are doing and feeling for the hours they spend away from you every day.<\/p>\n

While life can get hectic, there are always ways to make time to have better conversations with your preschooler. Doing these things every day will not only bring you and your child closer together, but also create a tradition of open communication that will last a lifetime.<\/p>\n
