Showing Your Preschooler How to Write a Letter

Though it may seem like a lost art, writing letters can still be a fun and important process. Even though your preschooler seems young, you can still show your preschooler how to write a letter. Below we have listed some simple things you can show your preschooler for the letter-writing process. Here are 4 tips (that all start with “S”) to show your preschooler the basics of letter writing!

Surprise your preschooler with mail

You can mail your child a handwritten letter. Your child can then experience the joy that letters can bring to others!

Share the joy with others

You can encourage your preschooler to help write a letter to surprise a family member or friend. You do not have to teach your child everything. But to begin, you can have your child tell you the words they want in the letter. You can then handwrite or type out your child’s words as they dictate them to you.

Share about the different types of letters

Letters serve different purposes. For example, they can be used to ask Grandma a question, to tell a story, or to share thanks. Let your child choose a purpose, to then be able to “write” a letter with you!

Spend time teaching about the envelope

Your preschooler may enjoy seeing the letter written from start to finish. Your child can learn about the return address, sending address, and where the stamp is placed. You can then take a trip to the post office or to a nearby post office box. If you don’t have time to take a trip, you can still show your child how to place the envelope in your home’s mailbox and then put up the red flag for the postal worker.

Thankfully, the process does not have to be stressful. Enjoy the time spent working on a new writing project with your preschooler!
