When you think of skills your preschooler needs you likely think of academic skills (i.e. alphabet recognition, counting, ect.).\u00a0 Did you know problem solving skills are a huge benefit to your preschooler now and in the future?\u00a0 Below are a few tips on helping your preschooler build problem solving skills.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t Hover<\/span><\/h4>\n

Try to avoid swooping in to solve your preschooler\u2019s problems immediately.\u00a0 Instead, watch from a safe distance while she tries to solve the problem independently.\u00a0 Watch for signs of frustration and offer assistance to avoid her becoming frustrated and losing confidence. Continue to avoid solving her problem, but help her brainstorm possible solutions and offer praise and encouragement.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Creative Play<\/span><\/h4>\n

A child who engages in creative or imaginative play will have more opportunities to practice problem solving than if he only engages in technology based play.\u00a0 Incorporate plenty of opportunities for your preschooler to engage in activities like building with blocks, creating open ended projects, or imaginative play.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Break it Down<\/span><\/h4>\n

Help your preschooler break the problem into smaller chunks.\u00a0 Talk through the problem and all the small details that make up the problem.\u00a0 Help your preschooler come up with possible ways to solve each of those small details.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Teach the Process<\/span><\/h4>\n

Teach your preschooler the steps of solving a problem.\u00a0 Ask your preschooler what the problem is and then identify all the pieces that make up the problem and tackle one piece of the problem at a time.\u00a0 Work with your preschooler to brainstorm possible solutions.\u00a0 Allow your preschooler to try out the solutions and then evaluate the problem.\u00a0 If the problem isn\u2019t solved, move on to the next solution.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Provide Social Experiences<\/span><\/h4>\n

Provide opportunities to play with other children his age.\u00a0 Encourage creative and imaginative play and allow them to work together to solve any problems that arise.\u00a0 Being able to solve social conflicts will help your child greatly!<\/span><\/p>\n
