Spooky Science Fun with Preschoolers

Spooky Science Fun with Preschoolers at Kids 'R' Kids Champions, preschool, daycare, childcare

Costumes, parties, and candy galore—Halloween can bring much fun for your preschooler. If you want to try out something new this October, you can also try some Halloween-themed science experiments with your special preschooler. Below are four fun and spooky science ideas to do with your preschooler.

Halloween Cookie Cutter Fun

Gather some Halloween-themed cookie cutters. If you cannot find any, you can use any cookie cutters and color the following mixture with fall-colored food coloring.

Next, have your preschooler add a tablespoon (or two) of baking soda into each cookie cutter. Then, let your child use a liquid dropper (or pipette) to squeeze vinegar into each cookie cutter. As the chemical reaction happens, enjoy your preschooler’s excited reaction.

Marshmallow and Toothpick Fun

Help your preschooler mix up and use Halloween-colored food coloring to dye several marshmallows. Once the marshmallows dry, help your child engineer “spooky” designs using the marshmallows and toothpicks.

Pepper and Water Fun

If you want an easy, no-mess, and cheap experiment, this science idea may be for you. Though this experiment can be done any time of year, it is easy to make it thematic for Halloween.

Use an orange bowl for this experiment, or you can have your child paint a disposable bowl orange (or add Halloween stickers to the bowl). Next, have your preschooler pour in ground black pepper into the bowl of water. Have your child touch the pepper-filled water and see that nothing happens. After that, have your preschooler add a small amount of dish soap onto the fingertip (or something of your choosing). Let your child see how the pepper spreads. Here is a helpful YouTube video to show the process.

Ice Melting Fun

In a gallon-sized bag, add water and any Halloween-items of your choosing (fake plastic teeth, candy corn, etc). Freeze this bag overnight. The next day, let your preschooler melt the ice and gather the prizes.

Hopefully, you and your preschooler can make some spooky science memories this year!
