September is Better Breakfast Month, and in many places, it is also when school begins again. Why not take this opportunity to teach your preschooler some healthy food habits?
We have all heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Have you ever wondered why? Children who eat breakfast are much more capable of staying awake, paying attention, and being in a better mood and ready to learn.
What does a “better breakfast” look like? Have your toddler help you choose foods from the major food groups. That is a wonderful place to start! Fruits like apples, bananas, and oranges, or berries like strawberries and blueberries are all great choices and provide many essential vitamins and minerals. Proteins like eggs, sausage, ham, or bacon will help your toddler stay full longer and provide muscle support. Dairy products like milk, low sugar yogurt and cheese help maintain strong bones and teeth. Whole grain cereals and breads can help your preschooler get fiber and iron.
It is not always possible to make a big breakfast spread in the morning, so do the best you can. Try a healthy smoothie one morning and some eggs and berries the next. Or offer a healthy cereal with a banana. You can build the breakfast around your time constraints and your preschooler’s palate if you give it a little thought in advance.
What foods should be avoided? There is no need to cut anything out completely unless your toddler has a food allergy. Just be careful not to load him up with sugar and empty carbs. This will not keep him full for long and may contribute to hyper behavior and a harder time concentrating. There is no need to throw out your entire pantry and start over, but make better choices moving forward.
Whether you are on the go or taking things slow in the morning, focus on providing the most nutritional foods you can. Use September to build better eating habits that can last all year!
