Summer is a wonderful time to kick back and relax without the added stress of inflexible schedules, but before you completely check out, it is beneficial to continue with a routine and learning with your preschooler. Summer can be an enjoyable time of exploration with your preschooler and activities that might not be as feasible during the school year.
Literacy
Literacy can be worked on throughout the summer through simply taking time daily to read. Allow your preschooler time each day to sit down with a book. Take the book outside and relax in the sun with it. It is important to continue to read aloud to your preschooler, too. Literacy skills can also be built through writing letters outside with chalk. Your preschooler may copy what you have written or practice on his own. During a walk, he may also expand his vocabulary through conversations with you over what all he has seen.
Math
There are many things outside which can contribute to number skills. During a walk, your preschooler may count all the animals she sees or the different flowers that are in bloom. She may also work on simple addition or subtraction working with various pieces of nature. Again, chalk could be used, as she works on writing her numbers.
Science
Nature is full of science. There are many things your preschooler can explore and discover outside. Take a walk, do a scavenger hunt, count how many different birds you see, journal about the favorite thing she saw, and consider going to a “pick your own” farm. Outside is the perfect place to do sensory play in sand and water, dig in the dirt for different insects, and do hands-on experiments.
The warm weather of summer and slower pace opens up different doors of learning that are not always possible during other times of the year. Summer learning can take on many different forms. It does not even need to look like traditional learning. Kick back and relax this summer while taking time to learn alongside your preschooler.
