Celebrating Better Breakfast Month with Your Preschooler

Celebrating Better Breakfast Month with Your Preschooler at Kids 'R' Kids Bella Terra, preschool, daycare, childcare

With preschoolers returning to a busier schedule during the school season, it is important to start them off with what is known as the most important meal of the day–breakfast! Research has shown that children who eat a healthy breakfast are regularly better behaved and also achieve more at school. Help your preschooler put their best foot forward by celebrating Better Breakfast Month!

What Makes a Good Breakfast?

A better breakfast should have elements from three or four of the major food groups: protein, dairy, grains, and if possible, fruits or vegetables. By incorporating a balanced variety, you are providing your preschooler with the necessary tools to maintain energy and avoid hunger. With a little pre-planning, you’ll be able to get your preschooler off to a great daily start.

Look For New Ideas

Celebrating Better Breakfast Month could mean working with your preschooler to explore new breakfast options. Sit down with your preschooler and try to come up with new ideas for breakfast. The options can be endless: smoothies, breakfast cookies, breakfast bars, drinkable yogurt, French toast, pancakes or waffles, low sugar cereals, eggs, breakfast burritos or quesadillas, granola, oatmeal, baked oatmeal, overnight oats, homemade donuts, muffins, and fruit are some options to help you get started. Mix and match options to ensure you are meeting the requirements for each food group.

Prepare Food Together

Celebrating Better Breakfast Month could be spending time together preparing some of the breakfast options if your preschooler enjoys helping out in the kitchen. Waffles, pancakes, and burritos are able to be made ahead of time and frozen. Other options like breakfast cookies, bars, and granola can also be prepared ahead of time but do not require freezing.

Eat Together

Celebrating Better Breakfast Month could mean taking time each morning to have breakfast with your preschooler and talk about the day ahead. This will not only help you enjoy breakfast but also not be tempted to rush out the door without eating. It will also help your preschooler know what the day ahead holds for him.

Taking time to celebrate Better Breakfast Month can help show your preschooler the importance of a nutritional breakfast. Establishing a routine now, at the beginning of the school year, will set you up for success in the weeks and months ahead. Plus, the habits learned at this young age could have lasting positive outcomes as school schedules become more demanding in the years to come.
