Sometimes, it may seem like a daunting task to teach your preschooler all of the necessary skills for life! It is especially frustrating when it seems like it will probably take a decade or more for the basic skills (please, thank you, excuse me, sharing) to really stick in your preschooler’s mind. One day, these will click, though!
There are other important and age-appropriate skills to start teaching your preschooler.
Basic phone skills
A preschooler can begin to learn your preferred way that the phone should be answered. Your child will also need to be taught how to speak on the phone, whether the phone’s speaker is on or off. Most importantly, your preschooler will need to be taught about 911. The 911 basics may be taught in the childcare setting, but your child will need to learn how to unlock your specific phone and/or make an emergency call.
Social skills
There will be ample opportunities for your child to have practice in social skills while in a childcare setting! However, in your home, you will get the chance to teach your child how you prefer to deal with tattling, for example. What “steps” will your child need to take to resolve a problem before approaching you?
Animal awareness
Your preschooler will need to be taught how to deal with other people’s dogs. They need to learn that they should not ever run up to someone’s dog. Also, a preschooler should be taught never to help a stranger find their “lost pet.” A good rule of thumb is that a child should never help an unknown grown-up without the child’s caretaker’s permission and presence.
Be encouraged! While you are teaching these age-appropriate skills, lessons may continuously seem to go in one ear and straight out the other. One day, though, these lessons will fall on fertile ground and take root in your preschooler’s life!
