Fourth of July With Your Preschooler

Fourth of July With Your Preschooler at Kids 'R' Kids Bella Terra, preschool, daycare, childcareYour preschoolers know exactly what the Fourth of July entails; hotdogs, hamburgers, fireworks, and a whole lot of red, white and blue! But do they know why we celebrate Independence Day and how this exciting holiday came to be? Keep reading to learn how to teach your little ones all about Independence Day and what it means to be patriotic.

The Declaration of Independence

The Declaration of Independence was created to separate the thirteen American colonies from Great Britain, which meant colony members no longer had to follow the rules of Great Britain’s king. Fifty six men signed the Declaration, which was approved by the Continental Congress on July 4th, 1776, and Independence Day was born!

The American Flag

You can also teach your preschooler about the American flag, what it symbolizes, and how it ties into patriotism. The fifty stars represent all fifty states in our wonderful nation, while the thirteen red and white stripes represent the thirteen colonies that existed when the Declaration of Independence was signed. Many view the American flag as a patriotic symbol which stands for the rights and freedoms that Americans have.

Patriotic Activities

If you’re looking for a few fun Fourth of July activities to get your tots in the spirit of patriotism, give these a try:

  • Many neighborhoods host bike parades on this festive holiday, so why not have a family bike decorating party? Break out the red, white, and blue streamers and stickers and ride through the neighborhood all together!
  • Bananas, blueberries, and strawberries make for a festive fruit salad; the perfect staple for a family picnic. Prepare and pack some portable snacks to enjoy outdoors on the Fourth of July – you may even catch a fireworks show!
  • Cookies and cupcakes are that much better when they’re covered in colorful icing, right? Pick up patriotic sprinkles and frosting at your local grocery store and bake the day away.

Enjoy this exciting summer holiday with family, and remember to share the importance of Independence Day with your preschooler!
