Traveling with preschoolers can be an incredible opportunity. Your child’s curiosity at this age makes visiting new places a fun and exciting experience. However, your child’s age may also make getting to the destination more difficult. Check out our tips below to help ease the stress of traveling with toddlers.
Choose a Destination Carefully
Consider safety when choosing a place to travel with children, especially young ones. Another point to consider is whether the area is easy to navigate with a stroller and if it has a lot of activities geared towards children.
Consider Housing Options
After you choose a destination, you’ll have to decide where to stay. Try to pick the place your family will feel the most comfortable. Even though exploring a new place is fun and exciting, sometimes the change in routine can be difficult on children and a comfortable home base can help. If a hotel room feels cramped or expensive, consider renting an Airbnb or VRBO, where there will probably be more space for the price. You’ll probably even have a kitchen for breakfast at “home” before a day of exploring.
Pack Activities
In addition to all of the clothes and snacks you’ll need for the trip, pack some fun activities for your children to do during the travel to and from your destination. Some favorites in our household are water reveal coloring books, board books, or a tablet. There are tons of great, educational apps that your preschoolers will be occupied and happy with for hours on a plane or in the car.
Keep It Simple
The first few trips you go on with preschoolers will definitely be a learning experience. It is really exciting to break out of your family’s normal routine, but it also means you’ll have to be ready for unexpected moods, mishaps, and reactions. From packing to planning activities, try to keep it simple and stay focused on the point of family vacation: to spend time and make memories with your family.
Hopefully, these tips will help your vacations with preschoolers go a little more smoothly. Keep in mind that the stress will be worth it because of all the fun experiences your children will be having and the memories they will be making.
