Teaching Your Preschooler to Ride a Bike

Learning to ride a bike is a rite of passage for any preschool child and, frankly, teaching a child to cycle is probably a rite of passage for caregivers as well! There may be some wobbly moments, but the end result will be a confident child who can spend time outdoors getting exercise and making some wonderful summer memories! Here are some tips for teaching your child to ride:

Start with a bicycle that is the best fit for your child!

It’s tempting to buy a bike your child can “grow into,” especially since a bicycle is a significant investment. Ideally, your child will be able to stand straddling the main bar with both feet planted firmly on the ground. The tendency while learning is to drop your feet back to the ground. If only tiptoes touch, your child will not feel safe.

Safety is key.

Make sure that your child is wearing all the proper safety gear. Helmets (research how to find the best fit for maximum safety) are essential, but knee and elbow pads may also ease your child’s mind (and the caregiver’s mind) and will definitely reduce the risk of injury.

Give yourself some space.

Take your child to a large, open space that has a smooth surface. Parking lots and cul-de-sacs can work well for this, but also consider public tennis or basketball courts nearby. This will give your child a large, open space in which to practice.

Speak with confidence and positivity!

There may be some inevitable anxiety (from you or your child) during this process. Set time limits, and don’t be ashamed to incentivize a can-do, positive attitude and willingness to try. A trip to get ice cream after a 15-minute lesson may be just the trick!
