Three Ideas for a Not-So-Scary Halloween
With October here, it’s officially time to get spooky! But just because Halloween is around the corner doesn’t mean you have to resign yourself to the same-old, same-old when it comes to celebrating this festive holiday with your preschooler. Check out these fun options for celebrating All Hallow’s Eve (in addition to just trick-or-treating)!
Explore haunting stories
A great way to spend your child’s pre-trick-or-treating hours (or in the event of inclement weather) is to take to the indoors for spooky stories. The internet is full of ghost stories and legends that are still appropriate for the youngsters. Encourage your child to explore classics such as Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. However, you could also go the extra mile and spend time with your preschooler researching local folklore pertaining to your neighborhood or region.
Prepare the ultimate candy stash
Just because you and your child may be going out trick-or-treating doesn’t mean you can’t share the fun with your neighbors. Spend time with your preschooler on Halloween preparing the bowl of candy you’ll be giving to other trick-or-treaters. Your child can help you choose which candy to set out on the porch for neighboring kids while you are out on your own trick-or-treating adventures.
Discover the history of Halloween
Another fun way to make celebrating Halloween into an educational activity would be to explore the historical origins of the holiday with your preschooler. The earliest records of Halloween activities trace back to the ancient Celts of Ireland and the United Kingdom, who practiced harvest festivals over 2,000 years ago. Since then, a number of Roman, medieval and other traditions have melded into our own Halloween traditions to create this truly unique holiday. For instance, the tradition of bobbing for apples most likely comes from the Roman celebration to honor Pomona, the goddess of fruit and trees.
There are plenty of ways for you to think outside the box and create a unique Halloween celebration that is educational, fun, and totally sweet!
