How you prepare your VPK-age child at home for preschool can\u00a0also help them defeat separation anxiety. We\u2019ve rounded up a few of the best\u00a0strategies from child development experts that you can use to make this\u00a0transition easier for you\u00a0and your child.<\/p>\n

How to\u00a0Help Your Preschooler Overcome Separation Anxiety<\/h6>\n

Talk them through the new routine.<\/h2>\n

Reach out to the preschool to find out what the daily\u00a0routine will look like. Then walk your child through what their school day will\u00a0look like. Try to be as specific as you can, mentioning the name of their new\u00a0school and teacher and what to\u00a0expect at the beginning and end of each day.\u00a0Also, let them know about any fun activities or facts about their preschool\u00a0that might excite them.<\/p>\n

Visit the school and meet with their teacher.<\/h2>\n

Taking your toddler to visit their new school and meet their teacher beforehand can play a vital role in making your child feel comfortable there. It allows them to get familiar with space and see that you know and trust their teacher.<\/p>\n

Playschool at home.<\/h2>\n

Playing pretend school with your child is another tool to\u00a0make the adjustment easier. Use their preschool’s routine as a guide for how\u00a0you play out school with your child and their toys.<\/p>\n

Talk about preschool positively.<\/h2>\n

Children pick up on your attitude as much as they do your\u00a0behaviors. If it sounds like you are worried about sending them to preschool,\u00a0they are more likely to worry about it too. Try to sound excited and confident\u00a0when you talk to them\u00a0about preschool. When you touch base with them about\u00a0their feelings about this new transition, be sure to ask open-ended questions. Instead\u00a0of asking, “What scares you about attending preschool?”; ask,\u00a0“How are you feeling about\u00a0starting preschool?”<\/p>\n

Read books to them about preschool.<\/h2>\n

Reading books to your child about going to preschool is\u00a0another way to prepare them mentally. These stories can help them process their\u00a0feelings and learn coping strategies.\u00a0Brightly\u00a0has a wonderful list of books to help get\u00a0your child ready for PreK.<\/p>\n

Increased Sanitation<\/strong> \u2013 All surfaces in our facility are disinfected multiple times a day, before and after use.<\/p>\n

Mandated that Staff Wear Masks<\/strong> \u2013 All of our teachers and staff wear masks.<\/p>\n

Facilitated Frequent Handwashing<\/strong> \u2013 Teachers practice frequent hand washing and ensure that the children also follow handwashing procedures<\/p>\n

Limited Contact<\/strong> \u2013 No unplanned, outside visitors are allowed on the premises.<\/p>\n

Upgraded to Keyless Entry<\/strong> \u2013 All locked doors have a keyless entry at all times.<\/p>\n
