The first day of preschool can be an anxiety-driven time for both yourself and your little one<\/a>. You\u2019ve had fun picking out a backpack and supplies but the big day is finally here and it could go extremely well or, on the other hand, not so well. Hopefully these five tips listed below will help to make your day as smooth as possible for both you and your little one.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Tip #1:<\/strong> Don’t worry – Be happy!<\/p>\n

Even if you are more nervous about their first day than they seem, put on a happy face. Your child can sense nerves and tension and as a result, may have a harder time adjusting to school. By having a smile and talking in positive tones about school, it sends the message that school is a good thing and will make it easier for your child to adjust.<\/p>\n

Tip #2:<\/strong> Prepare a comfort object.<\/p>\n

Have your child pick out a favorite something (or somethings if your school allows it) that they can bring to school that will remind them of home. This way, even though they will be in an unfamiliar place, they still have something comforting from home to make the transition easier.<\/p>\n

Tip #3:<\/strong> Start your day early and arrive at school early.<\/p>\n

You don\u2019t want to add unnecessary stress to the day by running around at the last minute getting everything ready the morning of. Instead, gather everything your child would need (backpack, school supplies, clothing, etc.) the night before. Turn it into a game with your little one<\/a> and help them gather their school supplies, pack their lunch and let them pick out their outfit. It\u2019s a great way to involve them and make them more invested in the first day of preschool.<\/p>\n

By starting your day early, you should also arrive at the school early. This will give your child some time to adjust at school before their first day officially begins. They will also have some extra time to spend one-on-one with the teacher and get a chance to look around the classroom without all of the commotion.<\/p>\n

Tip #4:<\/strong> Be present but not persistent.<\/p>\n

Most preschools allow a parent to stick around for the first couple of days to help their child adjust. If you can swing this, make sure that your child knows that you are there for them but don\u2019t hover. In other words, be present but try to stay in the background and don\u2019t be constantly checking in on them. That is what the teacher is there for.<\/p>\n

Tip #5:<\/strong> Make a goodbye ritual.<\/p>\n

Goodbyes should short and sweet with a smile and a reminder of when you\u2019ll be back to pick them up. To help with goodbyes, work with your child to come up with a secret handshake or saying that you can do as a ritual for saying \u201csee-you-later.\u201d This can give them something to look forward to when it comes time for you to leave. This ritual can even continue long after preschool to be a special bond between you and your child.<\/p>\n
