Summer can be a stressful time for parents as they try to keep their children entertained while they are off school for the entire season. A child\u2019s summer vacation can either be waste of learning opportunities or a learning paradise. <\/a>Don\u2019t give in to letting your young child watching hours of television & playing video games. Encourage them to get outside, enjoy the weather, and stretch their mind. With a little ingenuity & planning, summer can be a great time to learn new hobbies, enjoy sensory play, and build on skills learned during the school year.<\/p>\n

Here are some wonderful activities to share with your preschooler this summer:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Go on a Bug Safari – <\/strong>Take a walk in your backyard or at your nearest park and scout for different bugs or little critters. Dig for worms, follow butterflies around as they visit their favorite flowers, and marvel at tiny ants carrying large crumbs back to their home.<\/li>\n
  2. Chalk it Up – <\/strong>Children of all ages enjoy sidewalk chalk and creating a masterpiece on your driveway or concrete patio is great way for your whole family to participate. Encourage children to write their name, draw scenes from their favorite story, or create an imaginary creature.<\/li>\n

    Build a Backyard Obstacle Course – <\/strong>Obstacle courses are a fun activity that helps develop fine & gross motor skills so gather hula hoops, jump ropes, potato sacks, and even a sprinkler & hose then time children as they run through the homemade course.<\/li>\n

  4. Play Tourist in your Own Home Town – <\/strong>Visit historic locations & buildings, attend community park events, eat at under-the-radar restaurants, or take a behind-the-scenes tour of your local museum or factory. You never know what hidden gems you might learn about on an adventure right in your own home town.<\/li>\n
  5. Water Balloon Phonics – <\/strong>There\u2019s no better way to beat the heat than with water! Kids love water balloons and this fun summer activity provides a wonderful, fun way to learn<\/a>. For this activity, fill up 15 water balloons and write word endings on them with permanent marker. (Try endings like -at, -an, -ar, -in, -ug) Then write the following letters on an index card: B, C, F, H, J, M, and P. Tape these to a wall or fence about a foot apart. Let children pick up a water balloon and take it over to the wall of letters. Have them bring it to each letter to see if it makes a word. Once they have found a combination that makes a real word, they get to stand back at least two yards and throw the balloon at the letter to pop it.<\/li>\n
  6. Go on a Nature Scavenger Hunt – <\/strong>Give your children a brown paper bag and head out to your local state park or even your very own back yard. It\u2019s time to go on a summer scavenger hunt! Here\u2019s what you\u2019ll need to find:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
