Here are some suggestions that will help you and your child get the most enjoyment out of reading together:<\/h4>\n

  1. Try to make reading time a fun experience for you and your child.\u00a0 Choose a time for reading that is good for both of you.\u00a0 Don\u2019t try to \u201cimpose\u201d reading time as though it were a daily duty or if you or your child are feeling tired.<\/li>\n
  2. Give your child your undivided attention while reading to him.<\/li>\n
  3. Become aware of the kinds of books your child enjoys most.\u00a0\u00a0Ask his or her teacher, preschool, daycare, or child care professional for additional insights. <\/a>A trip to the public library will also enable your child to know more about the various kinds of books available.<\/li>\n
  4. Encourage your child to make his own choice of books.\u00a0 Ask him what he likes about the books he chooses.<\/li>\n
  5. Involve your child as much as possible in what you are reading. <\/a>Here are some suggestions: \u2022 Point to pictures in the book as you say a word, or ask your child to point to objects he recognizes. \u2022 Get him to join you, if possible, in reading recurring sentences. (\u201cRun, run, as fast as you can. You can\u2019t catch me, I\u2019m the gingerbread man.\u201d) \u2022 Ask him open-ended questions about the story. (\u201cWhat do you think will happen next?\u201d) \u2022 Help him to relate the story to his own experiences. (\u201cHas that ever happened to you?\u201d \u201cWhat would you have done?)<\/li>\n
  6. Help your child develop a sense of sequencing in space and time. (\u201cWhat happened first, second, next?\u201d)<\/li>\n
  7. Relate the pace of your reading to your child\u2019s interest in particular aspects of the story.\u00a0 Children often like to create their own \u201cside-road\u201d stories, becoming more fascinated with what happens along the way than with the story\u2019s ending.<\/li>\n
  8. Let your child cuddle up beside you or sit in your lap while you read with your arm around his shoulder.\"Child<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
