\nThe school year is winding down and with summer is right around the corner, parents everywhere are searching for the right summer camp for their child. Most parents want to give their child a memorable summertime experience. Identifying the perfect summer camp in Orlando for your child can be challenging<\/a>, but taking a few basic factors into consideration can make the selection process much simpler.<\/p>\n

The first choice to consider is whether and overnight camp or a day camp is suitable? Overnight camps nurture independence and help children develop social skills. They also give children a vacation-like experience. Day camps can give children a similar experience while allowing them to come home at the end of the day to share their experiences with family and friends<\/p>\n

Ask yourself, what is important to you and your child in a summer camp? Obviously, you and your child want a camp that is fun. Are you looking for a camp that will give your child an educational experience or one that gives them the opportunity to unwind? What about specialty camps? Some offer sports, computers, exposure to the arts or maybe even a space camp! There are some great choices out there so don\u2019t hesitate to mix it up; it\u2019s summertime after all!!<\/p>\n

Say you are looking to provide your child a variety of experiences. If that\u2019s the case, you may want to dig a little deeper. Ask about the types of activities offered; does the camp have a theme? Theme based camps extend learning by exposing children to real-life experiences.
\nWhat about field trips? Horizons are expanded when children are given the opportunity to visit places of interest in and around their community. Field trips should be age appropriate and relevant<\/a>. You will want to find out ahead of time where the camp plans to take children and if there are any additional costs associated with field trips.<\/p>\n

Speaking of field trips, how are the children transported? Find out if the camp has their own buses; whether they will be outsourcing to a third party or are asking parents to car pool. If the camp has their own bus; ask how often the bus is inspected; who drives the bus and the type of training drivers have. You want to ensure children are transported in safe vehicles with experienced, well-trained bus drivers.<\/p>\n

The quality of the camp staff can make a huge difference in the type of experience your child will have. Do they enjoy working with school-aged children? Have they worked with that age group previously? Ask how long each of the camp counselors has been employed. Look for a camp that has highly qualified staff and conducts background checks and training on a regular basis.<\/p>\n

To ensure your child has a positive experience at summer camp, ask about the discipline policy and how conflicts between campers are handled. What is the philosophy of the camp? You should feel comfortable that the camp\u2019s practices are in line with your family\u2019s values and parenting practices. If your child has special needs, you will certainly want to ask how the camp plans to accommodate those needs.<\/p>\n

Finally, ask the camp for references. A good camp will have families that return year after year. These parents are usually more than happy to serve as a reference. Visit the camp ahead of time with your child. If possible, meet the counselors that will be running and supervising your child during summer camp. Make sure both you and your child feel comfortable with the camp environment and the camp staff. Like most decisions that affect you and your family, you know when it feels right!<\/p>\n
